Student Affairs

The Student Services department provides assistance and avenues for students to be seen and heard.

When students enroll, our team of professionals guides them through the orientation process.  All students registering for first form are enrolled in an orientation course that informs them about our rules, policies and routines.

Student Services welcomes families, answers questions during the orientation process, and provides training and support for Georgetown Technical High School learning management system and discipline process. To ensure students success, families are encouraged to communicate with Student Services via a variety of methods, including phone, email, and virtual office hours.

Throughout the year, Student Services proactively identifies students who may have issues with behavior, time management and adequate academic progress, and provides assistance.  The department ensures that students are passing, facilitates the process of leaves of absence, and authorizes remedial and intervention ‘measures.

Parents’ Role

Parents play an essential role in preparing students for academic success.

The role of the parent, or academic coach, is to help provide organization and structure, to help create a proper learning environment, and to promote continuity in the learning process.  Parents also act as learning companions, advocates, and facilitators for their child.  They help build and sustain a positive relationship with the school, and work closely with teachers to ensure a successful learning experience.

Parents contribute to their child’s learning experience by being present and available as much as possible, showing an interest, asking questions, and communicating frequently with teachers. They are expected to provide additional learning materials, explore concepts together, review and proofread assignments, read with child, or simply express encouragement.

A strong partnership and excellent communication between parents, students and teachers, gives students confidence, sparks their desire to learn, and ensures a successful learning experience.  Keeping the lines of communication strong also helps with recognizing and addressing individual learning challenges.

Students’ Role

Our most important resource is our students

Hundred percent of our student body and teacher’s body commute to and from school daily. Our student population comes from 13 different communities in the Stann Creek District. Five different ethnic groups are distinctly represented within the school population.

At Georgetown Technical, we demand the highest level of academic responsibility from our students. Our students learn time management skills in order to achieve their goals. By developing a well-defined set of academic priorities, our students become accountable for taking notes, refining study skills, and meeting deadlines for assignments.  Georgetown Technical High recommends that students spend about five hours on schoolwork each day.   The process of building personal accountability and academic responsibility creates independent students who are well prepared to enter their college of choice after four years.

Teachers’ Role

Our teachers provide high-quality instruction for our students.

At Georgetown Technical High School School, students have access to teachers who offer them remedial services or retesting in their course of study.  Our teachers are fully-qualified, experienced professionals who are experts in face to face instruction and incorporate understanding of different learning styles into the relationships they develop with students.

As students progress through high school, they enjoy the specialized support of a different teacher for each subject.  The role of teachers is more involved, as they help students create an education plan designed to ensure entrance into their field of choice. Each student’s subject matter instructors frequently communicate with the student to promote student success in their field of choice.

Gifted & Talented

We understand the needs of gifted and talented students.

At Georgetown Technical High, we understand the opportunities that can accompany educating gifted athletic children.  Too often, traditional schools fail to offer enough flexibility to accommodate the development of athletic children. Specialized coursework and opportunities are designed specifically for the needs of athletic children.

We have long been the school for student athletes who seek flexibility as they pursue their outside talents and interests. Our courses are asynchronous, meaning that students can complete their work when it is convenient for them. Our high school allows students athletes to schedule their days and weeks in the best way to achieve all of their goals. Students can choose to do their textbook courses to best fit their learning preferences and activity schedules.

The learning styles model of education is a student-centered approach to learning which acknowledges the natural rhythms of childhood, the child’s innate love of learning, and the unique talents inherent in each child. “We believe that every child is a living treasure with the ability to demonstrate genius. The best learning environment is one that is nurturing and supportive. We honor the uniqueness of each of our students and appreciate the myriad of learning styles they present to us.” Our Motto supports this as we always say: “”The Love for Learning Remains with Us.”
